The Healing Arts: 18 Things Healers Learn, #13; It’s Over When It’s Over

Friday, August 10th, 2007

By Russ Reina And here comes a challenge: As a healer, what and how much of yourself are you willing to commit? Is it enough just to be there for the 50 minutes or half hour that is available on your schedule, or is it your duty really to pay attention to what is and go with that flow no matter how much time it will consume? Most situations unfold in such a way as to be self-limiting. That is to say, theyll have a beginning, middle and end where what happens on the scene will play out according to a natural rhythm. But there are times when the story of whats happening in the moment is simply not about the dynamic of a person with his or her own fate. You suddenly become a pivotal character in the drama. What that tells you is theres a really strong message for you, too. Just like the intended recipient of what you have to offer, you have an obligation to stick it out until the end. Not for him, her or you, but for the experience of life. There is an exercise used in acting classes that goes like this: Students are given a small soliloquy to read, then, are asked this question: Who was saying these words? Almost to a one, students reply with a description of some sort of the character who was speaking the dialogue. The question is repeated again and again until the student, worn down, realizes that the true answer is Me! The point is you are never in someone elses experience; you are always in your own. It happens to involve specific others such as time, place, persons or circumstances, but in the final analysis, it is your own. In that regard, consider everything of which you are a part as an intersection of forces. Is there any true rule about how long any one intersection should last? Of course not. So much is determined by your personal comfort level, the smooth flow of connection, the honoring or dishonoring of your personal limits and boundaries, and the persons receptivity in combination with the demands of the moment. The absence of rules regarding how long anything takes also embraces the understanding that a healing can happen in a flash. The only challenge is to note, and honor, what is real. Its not about throwing away the clock, though it could be. Its about recognizing when youre in the middle of what could be called a sacred intersection. This is where the circumstances of the moment have come together to include you in a powerful way. You discover you’re such a pivotal player in the drama, to leave would deprive both you and the other of something very important. Of course, every moment is a sacred intersection. Your role at all times is to see where you fit into the moment thats in front of you. This does not mean you must be a slave to the demands of others needs. It does imply, however, that your complete presence within the moments that you do have together as a willing participant — will be that much more effective than if your focus is on your watch. The trick is to build continually your sensitivity to the moment so that youre not blocking out what is in order to conform to an arbitrary schedule. Its a process of becoming adept at being completely present, yet still maintaining limits and boundaries, so you can move to where you need to be or are called to next. Probably the most important thing to remember is that to a person in crisis, abrupt beginnings and endings can be quite traumatic. Your entrance and the stance you take upon first exposure can literally determine the course of the persons life for God knows how long. The way you make your exit can color the moments to follow with every person or procedure he encounters for the rest of his recovery. If you’ve ever had to deal with a person in trauma who has just come from an encounter with a so-called caregiver who has handled the person roughly, you know how difficult it is to get things back to a place of stability, where healing can begin. A team approach to healing involves each person making sure they can maintain the stability of each phase of the person’s treatment, thereby providing fertile ground for the person to embrace an attitude that promotes their recovery. Allowing sensitivity to your role in each moment to be your standard operating procedure will not reduce the number of people in your waiting room. Nor will it increase their numbers, either. Everyone who needs to be there will be there, and you will do the work that needs to get done. The end result will be you will be able to move more smoothly into and out of the life of each person you touch by reducing the power that a ticking second hand has over both of your lives. Adventures in Cheese Making - Walk this Whey

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

By Paul Rinehart Ive had homemade cheeses before and loved how they tasted, but I never got around to making cheese myself. So one day recently, I mustered up the courage and began the process of learning how to make a simple cheese. Making cheese is a lot simpler than one might think at least when it comes to making a simple cheese. You can make it just by heating milk and adding vinegar, which is fairly similar to the way I improvise on a recipe requiring buttermilk. When I make imitation buttermilk, all I do is add lemon to the milk until it curdles, the only difference is that when it comes to making cheese, you harvest the curdled part. The solid substance is called the curd, the leftover liquid is called whey the same curds and whey Miss Muffet enjoyed. This seemed a little too easy and this type of cheese is fairly soft, with an almost cottage cheese-like consistency. I researched a little further to find a way to make a firmer cheese? The answer came Rennet! Rennet is traditionally made from the stomach of a calf, it is salted after the beast is slaughtered. You can buy rennet easily through various cheese-making supply websites. I was too impatient to wait to get the real stuff, but I found out that there were other forms of rennet that would give the same results. After looking for what seemed like an eternity, I found a recipe for vegetarian rennet. I took about a pound of nettle leaves, a couple of ounces of hops, and some yarrow flowers, put then in a pot and covered it with just enough water to immerse the plants. I brought it to a simmer and then let it sit for a while to steep. I then drained it and added about a cup of salt. Another thing that helps in cheese-making is conditioning the milk. Through my research I found that I had to add live cultures but where to get them? The answer ended up being rather simple, buttermilk and yogurt. In the same pot as the milk, I poured a half-gallon of milk, one quart of buttermilk, and a whole container of yogurt. I put in half a pint of heavy cream for good measure. I let this sit for a good two hours and guess what? It began to curdle. I wanted thicker curds though, so I poured a half-cup of my homemade rennet in and the curds got thicker in just a matter of minutes. To promote the growth of the bacteria in the yogurt, I let it sit a while, warming it slightly over the stove, careful to not even bring it to a simmer. I could now see the curds and the whey. The whey was a pale yellowish hue and the curds looked a little bit like scrambled egg whites. I then lined a colander with cheesecloth and proceeded to filter the curds from the whey. I put the curds into a bowl and added salt to further help the removal of excess liquid. Next, I returned it to the colander lined with a fresh layer of cheesecloth. I was anxious to taste it, and wow, it actually tasted like cheese! The next step is optional putting your cheese in a mold and pressing it. To make my press, I rummaged around the kitchen to see what I could use. I took an old plastic sherbet container and put a bunch of holes in it. I then placed my cheese curd filled cheesecloth inside and placed it in a large bowl and but a plate on top of my curds. Now the problem was having enough weight to press it. I placed two big cans of tomatoes on top and, voil, it worked. After pressing it, I put the cheese into the refrigerator and let it set. It tasted a lot like cheddar. Next time I try to make cheese, I probably use this same recipe but will try to improve upon it. When I master this one, then I think Ill feel a little more like trying a different style of cheese. Abs: How to Get a Sexy Six Pack?

Monday, August 6th, 2007

By Rajesh Shetty There are many factors responsible for abdominal fat like processed food, refined sugar, lack of exercise etc. But the following two invisible factors are mainly responsible for abdominal fat deposits. 1)STRESS 2)ALCOHOL 1)STRESS: Stress has become part of daily life. Job pressure, financial insecurity, problems in personal relations, traffic & pollution all take a heavy toll of our mental well being. All the above factors combined with continuous negative thinking and not living in the present moment lead to a pressure-cooker environment of the mind All of us lead a life either in the past or in the future.Your mind either thinks about the past or fantasizes and worries about the past. Nobody lives in the present moment living every moment and enjoying it as it is! This constant oscillation of the mind from past to present and present to past like a pendulum takes a heavy toll of your mind and body.Stress builds up and ageing becomes accelerated. The efficiency of the bodys various fat burning organs becomes very low. Stress is the main cause of stored toxins in the body. These toxins impair the normal functioning of the various fat burning and excretory organs like thyroid gland, lever, kidney etc. This results in the body not being able to cope up with even normal pressures exerted at various levels due to heavy work or faulty diet and the net result is obesity and weight gain. Accumulated stress and anxiety from daily stress full modern living releases a hormone known as cortisole. Research indicates that Cortisole is the hormone responsible for preferential deposition of fat in the abdominal area. So if you want a sexy six pack, getting rid of stress is very important. There are thousands of books on relieving stress and positive thinking. But no book has the exact answer for the varied stressful states of mind. Your breath has a vital connection with your mind. By concentrating on your breath you can control your wandering mind and bring it to the present moment. Various breathing techniques, Yogasanas and Pranayamas have the power to expel toxins and stress out of your mind and body and make you more and more centered. My e-book “Proven weightloss secrets revealed” shows various ways to easily overcome stress and to burn abdominal fat without working for hours in a gym. 2)ALCOHOL: Alcohol consumption leads to abdominal fat. Stanford university school of medicine has reported a link between drinking alcohol and abdominal fat. Recent findings report that alcohol drinkers have atleast twice the hip-waist ratios as compared to non-alcoholics. Alcohol also seems to make the body burn less fat and favours fat storage and subsequent weight gain. The main problem with alcohol drinking is that the stomach walls directly absorb alcohol. Since it never reaches intestine, the intestine doesnt give “full” signal to the brain. This causes the person to eat more. It has been observed that you tend to eat atleast 400 calories more when you are drunk. So, to reduce abdominal fat you need to reduce alcohol consumption or atleast reduce fat consumption whenever you drink. Spot reduction of abdominal fat is very difficult because fat melts evenly throughout the body. As such to reduce abdominal fat you must strive to reduce fat all over the body. Expelling the toxins out of your system and correcting the bodys fat burning mechanism can achieve this. Detailed explanation of how to do this has been explained in my e-book. Alcohol also seems to make the body burn less fat and favours fat storage and subsequent weight gain. Additionally, doing crunches regularly will help you a great deal in overcoming excess abdominal fat. Alternative Remedies for Every Day with Kids

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

By Kit Heathcock Alternative medicine is becoming more and more popular these days, as informed parents try to minimise their use of antibiotics for treating minor ailments in their children. As a first time parent I had little idea of anything beyond conventional medicine. It was only when my baby developed eczema and then several bouts of tonsillitis that I discovered homeopathy and, through that, tissue salts and herbal remedies. These days with three young children, I keep conventional medicine as a back-up for any serious illnesses and use a range of homeopathic and herbal remedies at home for all the small hurts and minor ailments that inevitably afflict families with children. The indispensible contents of my First Aid Kit are: Arnica pills these homeopathic pills are a brilliant remedy for bumps and bruises. They are soft lactose pills that dissolve easily in even a babys mouth. Homeopathic remedies are totally safe for children and this one really works to minimise bruising and soothe tears and shock. Try it on yourself if you havent experienced homeopathic medicine before.N.B. If you are unlucky enough to have a more serious fall or accident, these can be taken to help contain bruising while waiting for medical help. The only time they shouldnt be used is before an operation keep them for afterwards to speed healing. Arnica cream to rub on localised bruises. Hypericum and Calendula cream for small cuts and grazes. Antiseptic and soothing. A homeopathic antihistamine complex. My daughter reacts badly to bee stings, her whole foot and ankle swelling up. To help dissuade the body from building up antibodies and thus increasing the allergic response next time, I treat her with homeopathic Apis pills every half hour the first day, reducing to three times a day for the next few weeks. The antihistamine complex contains apis as well as histamine in homeopathic form and helps keep swelling down too. Tissue Salts are biochemic remedies containing minute quantities of the trace minerals that the body needs for balanced well-being. Also completely safe they dissolve easily under the tongue and kids usually like taking them. The most used one in our family is the Cough and Cold combination. At the first sniffle or cough I give them to my kids three times a day or more often. They have the effect of boosting the immune system, giving the body what it needs to fight off the virus. Another much used tissue salt here is No.10 Nat Phos. This is an acidity regulator, so helps the digestive system. Its main attraction for mothers is that it has the effect of calming down sugar crazed monsters after birthday parties or other binges, eventually restoring the children you know and love. Another homeopathic combination that I swear by is Levisticum Radix by Weleda. This is to treat ear infections. More than once I have used it to great effect when one or other recalcitrant toddler has refused antibiotics so vigorously that they were emptied all over us, rather than into her. We put her onto these drops, taken with a little water, which she accepted and when we returned to the GP a couple of days later to check on the infection he was amazed to find it improving substantially already. We continued with the drops for another few days and found we had done without the antibiotics altogether and cured the infection. One more useful remedy is Euphrasia for sore, itchy eyes or any redness. My son is allergic to horses and gets red, weepy eyes when he has been around them. Bathing his eyes with drops containing Euphrasia or taking the pills both help soothe them. As a basic guide homeopathic remedies and Tissue Salts should be taken three times a day, unless otherwise directed, in a clean mouth at least twenty minutes away from having had food or drink. They should be tipped into the cap of the bottle and thence into the mouth, without touching them with your hands, as some of the effective part could be lost on your fingers. I find in practise that children often do get their fingers on them and eat before twenty minutes is up and they still have a useful effect but those are the optimum conditions. By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Shruti_Sharma]Shruti Sharma Emergency - the word is written everywhere in red and considered a danger sign. We all are afraid of what we will do if we encounter this emergency. The word emergency is usually associated with money. Generally a crisis situation involves the money issue. The payday is too far and you need money right now. Look nowhere just click on payday loans. Payday loans are short term cash advance. It is an unsecured loan, meant for financing when time involved does not extend beyond a few days. You must be thinking that I am continually emphasizing on short term. This is because payday loans are optimal for short term financial crisis. It serves you good to remember that payday loans are not meant for long term cash management. It is not a permanent source of financial funding. Payday loans are meant to perform the function of meeting emergency financial needs of people until their next payday. Unplanned expenses spur up from time to time. It is inevitable; you cant be prepared all the time. Payday loans are meant to prevent consequence like late payment charges or bounced check fees. Or you can take payday loans to make that very important purchase that cant wait till payday. As, it has been already stressed payday loans are not the right choice for every loan receiver. However, that is not all that describes payday loans. Comparing loan rates online will help you understanding that payday loans offer great value and convenience. For the benefit of UK consumers - a few points to remember before they apply for payday loans. You must have a current, valid bank account with regular income that supports your goodwill in the loan market. It does not take very long to get payday loans application approved and in some cases only few minutes. When your loan is approved the money will be transferred the same day. You will be able to get hold of the cash the following day. The money will not be transferred on weekends and on a bank holiday. So, it is fairly easy to acquire a payday loan. Well, you might say taking is always easy. But, with payday loans repaying is easier. The due date for payday loans is decided in accordance to your pay date. You will be notified by the loan lending company a few days before the due date. Payments for payday loans are due every 14 days and can be extended upto 18 days. If the customer feel any discrepancy in the due date or wants to extend the due date, he can freely talk to his or her loan company. While scheduling your due date, remember that you have directed deposit in your bank account. A request for withdrawal will come on the morning of the due date. If you cant direct deposit apply for change of due date. The topic of credit history is intimately associated with loan borrowing. It befalls many people in UK and all over the world. Bad credit history is of course not a thing to rejoice about but it is not something that should weigh on you either. People with bad credit history have applied and successfully obtained payday loans. But, on the other hand if you have filed for bankruptcy within the past year, or have filed for multiple bankruptcies then you will come across a lot of difficulties in acquiring payday loans. A few hiccups while acquiring payday loans will be a high rate of interest and fees charged by companies can be high. This could result in unnecessary load for people with smaller pay check. High rate of interest comes with all kinds of unsecured loans. However, the upfront fees charged is mostly waived or reduced by the loan lending companies. There can also be the danger of some hidden fees. So, you are required to check and read carefully before you apply for payday loans especially the fine print. Payday loans are identified as check advance loans, cash advance loans, post-dated check loans, deferred deposit check loans. Payday loans business is expanding by every passing day. Payday loans are convenient loans. It is evident by the fact that payday loans companies have boomed by three times in the past year. As I have already said, payday loans score more points than any other short term credit option. Short here goes this term again but that is the key to payday loans. Payday dont you think paydays were not that far! Far let it be, we have payday loans. Shruti Sharma believes that nobody is born with financial wisdom but certainly one can learn to achieve it.
