Paper Dolls Retain Timeless Appeal

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Tania Penwell Diamonds may be a womans best friend, but a little girls best friend is definitely her doll. While dolls are usually associated with girls, paper dolls are made and collected by young and old alike irrespective of their gender. France is the place where paper dolls first appeared. Their origin can be traced to the reign of Louis XV when paper dolls were very popular among the French royals. Paper dolls emerged in England at about the same time, and they were used to convey moral stories in an attractive manner. In America, paper was initially very expensive so paper dolls were a luxury item that children took very good care of. Once paper became cheaper and more readily available, paper dolls were created on cardboard on a mass scale. Paper dolls were hand-painted and wore different types of clothes. Some were smartly dressed like European film stars, while others came only with underwear on! As early paper doll clothes came without tabs, people used sealing wax to stick clothes on to them. Patterned cloth, lace, and tissue paper were used to create clothes for paper dolls. Lots of girls and women earned a living by selling paper dolls. Men, women, kids, and animals are commonly employed in advertisement campaigns, but imagine dolls being used to advertise various products! Paper dolls were used to advertise new types of clothes and designs in various popular womens magazines, and their appeal was so great that they began to find place in newspaper supplements too. Paper dolls depicted clowns, animals, ordinary people and, most importantly, celebrities from the world of films and music. Obtaining these dolls is every modern day paper doll collectors dream. If you thought only kids collect paper dolls, think again! Adults collect paper dolls just as they do coins and stamps. Paper dolls represent fashion, celebrities, inanimate objects, and animals and are great fun to collect. They are also inexpensive. Adults who collect paper dolls say it reminds them of their childhood days. You can collect on the basis of a particular subject, for example, movie stars. As paper dolls grew in popularity they came to be sold in books. Many companies specialized in the making of these dolls. People who bought the books had to cut out the dolls, cloths, and accessories. Today, among paper dolls collectors, old books containing dolls and their clothes are a rage. They often fetch higher prices than dolls that have been cut. If you wish to start a paper doll collection buy from local artists and conventions. You can get in touch with other collectors via the Internet or placing ads in newspapers. Lots of greeting cards contain paper dolls. Keep a look out for them. Paper dolls are a great way to maintain peace at home and encourage creativity when your kids have a school vacation! These days, lots of paper doll templates can be downloaded from the Net. Encourage your kids to dress up dolls with crayons, bits of colored paper, and fabric. You can also ask them to make paper dolls resembling themselves! Let collecting paper dolls become a family affair! Tania Penwell is a regular contributor to The Doll Site, your guide to dolls of all kinds including paper dolls. The Receiving End Of Unfaithfulness

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Tony Tate Unfaithfulness - As it is ending a relationship is difficult. It is even harder for the person in the relationship who is giving all he/she has only to find out that their partner has been unfaithful. How do they handle it? Will they bounce back or, NOT be able to be in relationship for a very long time? Will they become bitter? Will they give up on relationships all together? Will they ever be able to trust? All of these things may be possible as a result of unfaithfulness. Some people are even driven to murder. I certainly have been there and felt this kind of rage and anger. It comes out of pain and betrayal. I am not saying these feeling are right or justified. I am just acknowledging that they happen. When you begin to suspect that your partner is being unfaithful you dont want to believe it. However the evidence keeps piling up. You get scared and if you are like me you try to work even harder to make the relationship work. At the same time in desperation you start to dig and look for more evidence to support your suspicion. All the while hoping that you are wrong. This is why you believe every lie you are being told. You believe every explanation given for the inconsistencies you have begun to track. You are in denial. The unfaithfulness continues. Now your friends and people you know are noticing that something is bothering you. Some of them even know that your partner is cheating. Your true friends are telling you that they suspect your husband/wife is cheating but you dont believe them because you are in denial. With people watching and telling you what you already know deep down the pressure is mounting. You are going to have to confront your partner. Finally the truth comes out. Whether by confession or discovery of conclusive evidence the unfaithfulness is now out in the open. You are devastated. For whatever reason your partner does not seem to care. Sometimes it can even be worst than this. Sometimes they convince you that they know they have made a mistake and that they want to make the relationship work. You believe them against your better judgment and go through the same thing all over again. Now you are twice destroyed. All you can think of is death. You want to die. You want to kill and punish. But alas if you are sane all there is for you to do is endure the unbelievable pain that is in every part of your being. You hurt all over. You dont eat. You will hurt for months, years, and maybe even a decade. After a lot of time finally you become functional again but what about love and relationships? You meet a few people but nothing ever develops. You usually end up finding a way out because, when you think about getting involved in another relationship all it takes is one thought about your past and you decide right then and there that you dont want another relationship. So even if you have forgiven and done your best to let go of the past it still affects you. There is no doubt that given enough time and meeting the right person a new relationship can be had. But this article reveals how fragile the human heart can be. Relationships should not be taken lightly. Take every step to make sure that your relationship is being built upon a strong foundation (not sex). Know the person you are getting involved with. What is their character, beliefs, and way of life? You can never know completely before you get married, but you should endeavor to take all the time you need. It is better to take extra time at the beginning than to need so much time after devastation to recover from a broken heart. Unfaithfulness is can kill any relationship and it can happen to anybody. For the person on the receiving end the effects last a lot longer. It doesn’t seem fair but this is life. Because it is life we must get over it. All I can tell you here is that holding on to the past only makes the pain, anger, and whatever else last a lot longer. These things must be let go. Stop embracing them and embrace something else. You must embrace love. Only in embracing love and letting go of the past can you find healing. From the bible, “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Love will last forever..” (1Cor 13:4-8) Love is a safe place. If you don’t know love allow me to introduce Him. God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him might not die but have everlasting life. Jesus is that Son. Jesus says,”No better love has any man than to give His life for His friend.” You say why should I have to be the one to have to do all this? Because you are the one hurting. This is the way to healing. On line dating and free relationship advice - is a web site discussing various methods of on line dating and finding, judging, and using free relationship advice. The Best Secret Fishing Spot On The Planet

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By A.J. Klott Timmy has been talking about this place for years. He would talk, and I would sit there riveted, hoping he would slip up and divulge the location of his own private fishing Nirvana. Each time he told the story, he would give a few more bits and pieces, and like any good super fish sleuth, I would make mental notes, and go home and pull out maps trying to find this “needle in a haystack” creek. It is not like he hadn’t offered to take me there someday, it’s just that each year seemed to pass by, and we just didn’t seem to make it there. Then…. the next year we would eventually drift in to fish talk about “secret creek”, and I would start the whole process of mentally picturing the bubbling springs, wildflowers, plentiful trout, and wild solitude. Tim had been going to this place since he was “knee high to a chicken”,(do chickens have knees?) and according to Tim, this place hadn’t changed much since his “Baba” had dragged his sorry butt up and down these Oregon peaks and meadows. “Nobody fishes this place.” Tim would say. Then he would tell me of fish after fish after ever lovin’ wild fish, he and “Baba” would catch and release. They would crash through brush, climb over logs, slog through mud and all the while keep looking over there shoulders just to make sure a bear or cougar wasn’t sneaking up on them. Fishing Nirvana. “These aren’t the biggest fish in the world, most are 9 to 12 inches with an occasional 18 incher.” Tim would say. “And you’ll have to belly crawl and sneak up to a lot of places, and we really can’t fish it until the snow melts and the runoff settles down in mid July.” “Let’s go.” I would say, emphatically making sure he knew I was of the same ilk as he was when it comes to fishing. The summer of 2006 was the year. Plans were made, and I still looked on U.S. forest service maps trying to make last minute guesses as to where we were headed. I half expected Tim to blindfold me like some hostage negotiator being led to an undisclosed location, so as never to find this place again. But, Tim probably figured no one in there right mind would venture into this spot alone. Tim told me the first day we were only going to scout, just to make sure the water levels were right and had receded enough to fish the creek. We drove high into the mountains, hauling our four wheelers so we could get back easier on the road that led higher and higher into the mountains. Up we went on a goat road, until we came to a spot where a small creek crossed under the road. We stashed our quads in the trees. Then we hiked a mile or so up a creek with no trail. There was a fair amount of water still coming down this high mountain creek, but Tim said, “looks good”. Of course he also said our fishing spot was still five or six more miles up stream. I emphasize the part about… no trail???!!! I stood looking at the creek and peered into the water hoping to see that “occasional 18 incher”, but saw nothing. In fact, as I looked at the series of cascades, drops, and logjams, I could hardly believe this place could hold so many fish. I kept picturing a massive runoff that certainly would tumble all these fish into the larger river miles downstream. Nonetheless, I trusted that Tim knew his Nirvana. The next day the plan was to take two vehicles. We would drop one “close by” the tail end of our hike out and drive the six or seven miles upstream and fish our way down back to our rig. We bumped our way up a typical logging road almost to the crest of this steep Oregon range of mountains. Then we again stashed our rig in a place where no one would have a clue why we were there. Very covert operation… After making sure we hadn’t been followed, or spied upon, we grabbed our hidden fishing rods and literally-”walked into the woods”. Timmy is a surveyor by trade, so I felt confident that even though he seemed to be wandering off into an endless forest of spruce, Doug fir and cedars, he knew exactly where he was. We kept climbing and weaving our way in a westerly direction, picking up small deer trails. Or maybe they were Bigfoot paths! As we hiked the couple of miles up and down one draw after another, Tim was transported to his youth, and it started to really come clear why this was his favorite fishing spot. He talked of his deceased “Baba”, a true Oregon homesteading pioneer, who would drink Old Crow whiskey and crow about all these newfangled granola types moving into our area and “screwin’ with it”. He would name off species of trees, point out the sick ones- probably some of the same trees his “baba” had pointed out to him–and talk of a big buck or bear he and “baba” had tracked. He talked how he and his son had made this same trek, and how Andrew complained about having his sorry butt dragged all over these hills, and then falling in love with this same place like the three generations before him. We’d stop to unsnag our fishing lines from branches and slide down steep hillsides, climb over logs and you could feel the anticipation in the air as Tim-redescribed- for the hundreth time what we would see when we got to our creek drainage. And then it was there. Just as promised, we reached the headwaters of a small mountain creek, somewhere here in the mountains of Oregon. Water bubbling out of the ground from numerous fingers, wildflowers galore, and a giant snow rimmed wall of rocks and trees all around us. end of part one….. A.J. Why Cheesecakes Make The Perfect Gift

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Stephen Whiteside Cheesecake makes a perfect gift. There are guidelines that should be followed when choosing the perfect gift. For one thing, the gift should be chosen specifically for a certain individual whose tastes are known to you. If you are not well acquainted with the recipient, you must give a general-type of gift that will not offend. Another guideline for choosing the perfect gift is that the gift must fit, and most important, if the recipient doesn’t like the gift, it must be passed on to someone else. Do you know anyone who doesn’t like cheesecake and wouldn’t consider it the perfect gift? For gift-giving occasions the ultimate gift is one that is adored and can be shared with others, and this makes cheesecake the perfect gift. Even if the recipient is on a low fat, no fat, no sugar or no carbs diet, cheesecake is the perfect gift because it can be made to adhere to almost any diet by carefully choosing the ingredients. In today’s society there is almost no limit to the availability and variety of ingredients that go into a cheesecake. Can you imagine the pleasure on the face of that special someone on whom you have bestowed a freshly made cheesecake? Add a few different toppings such as a variety of fruit toppings and streusels to adorn the cheesecake and you have created the perfect cheesecake gift. There are different varieties of cheesecakes such as the original New York cheesecake, which is probably the most well known of all the varieties. Create a cheesecake in your own kitchen and present it in a special dish to a special person. When you see the pleasure on their face, you’ll know that cheesecake makes the perfect gift. 2 Little Known Baby Crawl Tips Every Parent Ought To Know

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Dalene Joubert “What baby crawl?” “My baby doesn’t even have a desire to move. What’s more, he won’t use his arms or knees to hold himself up.” “How do I get him to move… and maybe to crawl?” These are just a few questions concerned parents ask almost daily. But teaching your baby to crawl is actually very easy. Here are 2 little-known tips you can use to help your baby in no time. “Your legs” Method Sit down on the floor and stretch your legs out in front of you. Lie your baby on his tummy across both your legs — arms and upper body on one side of your legs and legs on the other side. It’s usually easier to lay your baby across your upper legs where you can easily reach and handle him. In this position your baby should be in the natural crawling stance. This position forces your baby to carry some weight on both arms and knees… thereby strengthening them at the same time. Once the arms and legs strengthen, crawling will come naturally. At this age your baby is also very much interested in himself. To make things even easier, sit with your shoulder next to a mirror. Let your baby face the mirror and see himself. You can also use any other reflective surface for this purpose. It’s not necessary to use a very large reflecting surface… only large enough for your baby to see himself. Once your baby is strong enough to stand unsupported in the crawling position continue to encourage crawling on the floor. In no time you’ll see the results. Another technique that works very well to speed up baby crawling is… The “Bathroom Towel” Technique You’ll need a normal large bathroom towel for this technique. You’ll use the towel to support and lift your baby off the floor. The aim of this technique is to use the towel to encourage standing in the crawling position. And to strengthen the arms and legs. Here’s how to do it… Lay the towel flat on the floor. Don’t spread the towel in its width. Lie your baby on his tummy across the width of the towel… head and arms overhanging on one edge of the towel and legs on the other edge. The towel must just be under his tummy and upper body areas. Now take the two towel ends, one in each hand, forming a U-shape. Gently raise your baby… just off the floor. Your child’s natural reaction will be to stand on arms and knees -assuming the normal baby crawl position. Your only task is now to lower your baby to increasingly take more weight on his arms and legs. With a bit of trying and encouragement you’ll strengthen the legs and arms which is much needed to get your baby crawling. Of the two techniques, you may find laying your baby across your thighs easier. But using the towel suspender with a brightly colored toy for encouragement may actually work better for others. Best is to try both methods to see which works best. You may be concerned about your baby not crawling. And maybe you’re wasting time and money on things that’s not working. So, there’s absolutely nothing any parent can lose by trying these little-known baby crawl tips. A Recipe for Romance

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Andrew Marx Cooking together at home is a great idea for a romantic evening. The emphasis on food in our lives makes cooking a great aphrodisiac for most of us. Two lovers in the kitchen, passing ingredients back and forth, flipping steaks and baking French bread to a crunchy brown crust. Boiling edamame for an appetizer and popping the cork on a new bottle of red wine, and then sitting down with a heaping plate of steaming hot food. The variations are endless, but you can see the appeal. The cooking is the anticipation, and the payoff is not only the meal, but a lovely evening with your date. I am practical cook, too. I believe in simple recipes, easy clean-up and a well-balanced meal. If you know in advance a romantic dinner is pending, marinating the meat or fish overnight is a simple way to get a flavorful main dish without a lot of fuss. Some salad dressings do work as a marinade, but make sure they are complementary flavors. And in this case, I do not mean complementary as in a faithful companion to what else you might be serving, but complementary as in, does not taste like death after soaking in the meat overnight. Soy sauce also works well as a marinade. Easy clean-up usually means putting foil on anything that goes in the oven, so you can rip the foil off after dinner and toss it, and the baking pan is clean. My kitchen is pretty non-stick as a rule, and after dinner, I soak everything. It serves a dual purpose; you do not spend your entire evening at the sink washing dishes, and if you forget about them, you do not spend the entire next morning trying to scrap the caked leftovers off of your pots. In the early stages of dating, I like to avoid starches because it can make some people feel bloated or heavy. Pasta can be a beautiful dinner, but you have to know how you and your date are going to react to it because nothing kills a romantic evening like suddenly developing a three-pound ball in your stomach. For romantic evenings, too much of any one flavor is counterproductive. Remember, small portions, a variety of flavors and lots of colors. Fresh vegetables, washed and cut, can do amazing things to stimulate your senses. Depending on you and your dates tastes; green or red peppers, carrots, or even cucumber slices. Works great with dip or just on their own. Instant healthy side dish that meets all three criteria. It is really important to follow up dinner with a dessert. Whether it is a small square of chocolate just to kill the lingering taste of dinner, or something more elaborate for later in the evening, be prepared. Lets face it, we are creatures born and bred screaming for our sugar fix, and it elevates the mood. My recommendation is have something on hand and then if you never make it to the dessert course, most will keep for another day. —Andrew Marx writes articles on topics including personal finance and relationships, emphasizing a practical and informed approach to his ideas. Plant Pansies for Autumn and Winter Color

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Rachel Murphy Despite the derogatory connotation associated with the name “pansy”, the little plants are some of the hardiest to be found in the garden. At any given time of the year pansies are found blooming in some region of North America. They are Spring and Summer favorites in the northern regions and Autumn and Winter staples in the south. In climates that dont have the extreme heat and cold of the north and south the delicate looking blooms can be found year round. Pansies come in a dizzying array of colors. The best known ones are the ones who have what is commonly called a “face”. The face of a pansy is the black patches that can be somewhat circular or look like they were hand painted with streaks. Some newer varieties on the market have faces that are other colors such as blue or burgundy instead of the traditional black. The colors range from delicate whites, creams, and pinks to bold yellows, oranges, and reds. There are dramatic blacks and burgundies as well as soothing blues and purples. The varieties that are termed “clear” are the ones where the “face” in absent. Choosing a variety is the hardest part of growing pansies. The plants require very little care and preparation to be a spectacular addition to your garden or patio container. They are also delightful in window boxes to add some charm. When shopping for the plants themselves choose plants that are short and compact with many flower buds. The leaves should be a dark green. If the plants are tall and leggy they should be avoided. By choosing the bushy plants with fewer blooming flowers and more buds you have chosen a plant that will grace your garden with a longer bloom time. Pansies prefer at least a half day of sun, preferably more. They also enjoy a moist but not soggy soil. The plants should be spaced about six inches apart to achieve the lush look that I call the “patchwork carpet” look. This is when the pansies are planted close enough together to grow together in a colorful carpet like mass without overcrowding them. It is absolutely breathtaking when you see them displayed in this manner. An all purpose fertilizer can be added when they are planted. The plants must be watered in thoroughly. The final step is to add about two inches of mulch such as straw to hold in moisture and add a little winter protection. And thats it. Regular watering, removing spent blossoms and pinching the plants back if they get overgrown is all that is required. With these tips you will have the prettiest pansies on the block. Into Relational Dynamics & Female Behaviorism

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Rion Williams Let’s look at a fast and general look at the three root behavioral traits here. Inner = personal development, advancement, empowerment, intelligence, self-esteem and self improvement Social = social persona, conscious pre-tension & caring about what others think as well as environmental or socio-cultural adaptive behavior to seek approval of others higher up on the social hierarchy Natural = unpretentiousness to the atom, unconscious and ununfluenced behavior at the roots Guess which one women are unconsciously attracted to (without mercenary tendency)? Yep, the man who can walk into a room completely unpretentious. Supremely (alpha) Not caring what others think, not trying to use, abuse, or manipulate anyone. It’s a man with behaviorally evident natural character and who can comfortably communicate with others without pretension or letting them manipulate or coerce him. Social status unfortunately takes more prestige than it deserves in our unnaturally socially oriented culture. It can be used to help attract women to you but if you don’t have the natural character to trigger their natural attraction response you won’t be getting very much bedroom action. The ‘natural’ guy is so REAL and unorthodox it’s irresistibly attractive to women. He’s so comfortable in his own skin because he’s relationally independent to all other power, sexploitation and beauty within his reality. Is this merely a ‘technique’? Is there any body language ‘technique’ that can take a man from being fearful of hot women and caring what others think to being this ALPHA male of reality? If you’re just limited to your logical ‘Inner game’ or personality, you’re not being effective with women on the other levels. Be the man across all levels. Improve yourself to be what I call ‘NIS Alpha’. Natural, Inner and Social Alpha. A man of character and quality attributes on all the levels you can be and that women are looking for. Then, it’s just communicating those across to women to raise their attraction response to you. Inner personality traits which women say they want in a man matter the least up front. Sure they matter for a long-term dating or marriage relationship but women are looking at your social and natural character upfront. Are you sending the right signals? You should be at all times if you want to attract them to you. Remember that you’re always communicating something and women are extrapolating that data to form an image of you and the potential value you have. Communicate the desired ‘alpha’ traits and they’ll be drawn to you. When you can continue to communicate that indeed you ARE the man that they thought you were, you’re stepping way ahead of your competition especially when you remain relationally independent and comfortable in your own skin around them. So much of my Alpha Relational Dynamics stems off of the root behavioral characteristics of both men and women. When you are cognitive of them and your relationship to them, everything will begin to make sense. You will have the tools to put together a massively effective dating lifestyle as well as being the best you can be in a confusing world of power struggle and oppressive influence. How to Lose Your Weight

Friday, August 10th, 2007

By Scott Morris The decision to lose weight is not one that many people make lightly - excuse the pun. Often, it has been flitting around in the mind for years. It may even have been reached, acted on and abandoned as another fad diet bit the dust. Then, a rogue photograph appears depicting you doing your best whale impression, or you are unexpectedly required to move quickly (perhaps during a fire drill at work, where everyone sees you panting), and almost expire from the effort. Shamed into action you decide once again that another attempt to shed weight will be worthwhile. The good news is that you needn’t do it on your own. A huge range of weight-loss programs exist today - from independent, locally run clubs to the multi-national organizations- all offering weight-loss plans to suit individual needs and budgets. Arguably, one of the most successful of the large organizations is WeightWatchers. Founded in a New York apartment over 40 years ago by Jane Nedetch, the small support group for friends has grown into the vastly successful international company that it is today. By combining a program of healthy eating and exercise with group support, WeightWatchers developed a ‘partnership’ approach to dieting which has since been emulated by many other weight-loss organizations world wide. How does WeightWatchers operate? Membership: After locating a local meeting venue via the internet or the local press, members can join the organization for a fee of around $25-$30. This membership fee is often waived during special promotion months, which are generally advertised in the media. A weekly fee of around $10-$15 is paid at each meeting, although monthly and three-monthly packages can be bought in advance at a discounted rate. Membership lapses if a member fails to attend meetings for four weeks. Members must pay for a missed meeting but if they have missed more than two, they need only pay for the first week missed and for the current week. Each member is allowed to miss two meetings in the course of the year without having to pay. When a member has reached an agreed ‘goal’ weight and maintained it (within two lbs or one kilo) for six weeks, he or she becomes a Life member and may attend future meetings free of charge, provided the goal weight is maintained and at least one meeting is attended each month. Online membership is now available for those who cannot attend meetings or who live in a rural area. A monthly online membership costs around $44. The Points System: The dietary part of the WeightWatchers program works on a ‘points’ system. Every food is allocated a point value according to its fat and sugar content. For example, an apple may be valued at one point, while a sausage may be valued at five. Most vegetables and salad ingredients are ‘free’ and can be eaten without penalty. Members are given a daily point allocation of around 18-22 points, depending on their current weight. No food is forbidden, as long as the point value is factored into the daily point consumption. Points may be saved for later in a week to allow members to eat out. Various exercises are also given a point value. Bonus points gained by being active, allow the member to save for later in the week, or may be spent on an extra treat to the value of the bonus on that day. There are ceilings on the number of points which can be saved or earned in any one week to prevent binge eating, starving and excessive exercising. All members receive a points-value guide to the basic foods in Week One of the program. The Meetings: On joining WeightWatchers, the member’s height and current weight are recorded in the ‘passport’ document, which holds each member’s personal details for the duration of the program. The member retains the passport and only has to produce it when being weighed. A general goal weight is then set in consultation with the group leader, based on healthy weight to height ratios. A more specific goal can be set later when the member’s weight lies within this ratio. The member receives the Week One support materials which included a weekly brochure containing a tracker (for recording food intake, exercise and points) a possible weekly menu, some words on the topic of the week and a Quickstart DVD ( a support DVD to be used during the first six weeks of the program). The member then attends the weekly meeting during which the leader delivers a talk on the week’s topic and members are invited to share their experiences, questions and advice. Why is WeightWatchers so popular? Many devotees of the organization will answer this in just one word: Flexibility. The weight-loss plan which runs for 24 weeks can be tailored to meet a wide range of needs. The points system allows for total flexibility of menu. No food is forbidden or compulsory and the menus if used are written with busy lifestyles in mind. Meetings are also flexible; with members being able to attend meetings at other venues should they find themselves unable to get to their usual meeting. Members are also free to choose the level of their involvement at these meetings. While some need the group support each week, many people opt to just ‘weigh-in’ then leave. Either is acceptable. In addition, WeightWatchers offers a wide range of support materials: a points value guide to specific brands of foods, a Supermarket guide, the Eating-Out guide, a monthly WeightWatchers’ magazine, WeightWatchers’ own food products, cookbooks and scales. Like any weight-loss program, the WeightWatchers system does have some drawbacks. As it is run at a local level by leaders who have previously lost weight on the program, and current members who volunteer, the effectiveness of the support group is dependent on individual personalities. If a new member has trouble fitting in with the existing group, he or she may choose not to return. Some people may also argue that the points’ system approach to weight control is a short term method and just one of many weight-loss options, although none of these other options are promoted to members. Finally, for many people the weekly fee is too expensive, especially if the member does not like to attend the meetings. It does seem extravagant to spend $15 each week just to step on a pair of scales. Regardless of these criticisms, people are still flocking to join WeightWatchers and many similar weight-loss organizations across the globe. In today’s world, weight-loss needs to be less about vanity and more about health and well being, with all the benefits of looking good ‘thrown in’. Weight Watchers offers a practical, accessible and structured way forward to a fit, healthy lifestyle. Morris gathers information about sporting events sporting news weekly.
